The Quiet History of Jamu
Long before it was a wellness trend, jamu was a daily inheritance passed between women.
Jamu was never meant to be extraordinary. For generations, it was simply what was made in the kitchen on an ordinary morning — turmeric pounded by hand, ginger boiled slow, a recipe held in memory rather than in writing.
What made it powerful was never the ingredient list. It was the attention. A mother noticing her daughter needed warmth, not medicine. A grandmother reading a body the way others read a book.
At Fela, we work with practitioners who still carry that inheritance, and we ask them to teach it the way it was taught to them — slowly, and in person.
Jamu circles are held monthly on the Fela Calendar.
